GOT OIL?

Just how much oil does the US use? if this Google Earth model is accurate it's shocking how much oil the US consumes compared to any other nation on earth.

Hint. You need to have Google Earth installed to see the model.

I know my next car will be a hybrid. That's one way to make a difference, however, how about general consumption?

How much oil goes into creating a new widget? Everywhere you look it takes oil to manufacture, create and transport just about everything from vegetables to diapers.

The really scary part - as most people know - is the unknowns. What happens when 1.2 billion in china and 1 billion in india develop the income and demand for all the oil related goods that other industrialized nations have? Peak oil is coming, it's just a matter of what the world will look like in the future.

This NYtimes article from three years ago is interesting, especially with 20/20 hindsight.

Green Washing? Or the real deal?

Last week I received an email from a person accusing Aviawest of "green washing" - basically posing as an "environmental sensitive" company. He saw the company truck which has an ethanol sticker on the side of it.

Ethanol. Yes it's controversial. However, given the choice that they didn't make hybrid pickup trucks, it seemed like a good alternative. Maybe we were wrong. We'll buy hybrid trucks in the future. We checked when we bought the pickup in question, and they didn't have them at the time.

Let's say ethanol is a bad choice. Does it mean that we are 'green washing'? Absolutely not. Parkside Victoria is on track to achieve LEED Platinum status - the highest standard of green building practices.

Climate Change...an interesting observation.

A friend of mine forwarded me this video about climate change and what may happen to the world under a few different scenarios. 

What would be more devastating, action to prevent climate change, or no action?
